"OutRun: Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney's Surprise Film Project"
Sega's iconic arcade racing game, OutRun, is set to hit the big screen with an unexpected movie adaptation. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Universal Pictures has tapped Michael Bay, renowned for directing the Transformers franchise, to helm and produce the OutRun movie. Joining him as a producer is Sydney Sweeney, who is also known for her acting prowess. The screenplay will be penned by Jayson Rothwell, though specifics about the plot remain under wraps, and no release date has been announced yet.
On the Sega front, Toru Nakahara, a key figure in the production of the Sonic movies, will serve as a producer. Additionally, Shuji Utsumi, CEO of Sega America and Europe, will oversee the project, ensuring that the film stays true to the spirit of the beloved game.
Originally launched in 1986, OutRun was developed by the legendary Sega designer Yu Suzuki. Known for its stunning graphics at the time, the game has seen numerous versions and ports over the years. A notable sequel, OutRun 2, was released in 2003, while the most recent iteration, OutRun Online Arcade by Sumo Digital, came out in 2009. Despite a period of dormancy, Sega has been actively revisiting its classic titles, with new projects for Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, and Shinobi currently in development.
Sega has also been successful in adapting its intellectual properties for the screen. The Sonic the Hedgehog movies have garnered significant popularity, and an adaptation of Like a Dragon: Yakuza was released on Amazon last year. The success of video game adaptations continues to grow, with films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the upcoming A Minecraft Movie setting new benchmarks at the box office.
While details about the OutRun movie's storyline are scarce, the involvement of Michael Bay hints at a thrilling, high-octane experience, possibly akin to the action-packed style of the Fast & Furious series.
