Orpheus Freed: A Crucial Choice in Baldur's Gate 3

Author : Lucas Update : Jan 21,2025

In Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most pivotal decisions awaits players near the game's climax: free the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allow the Emperor to handle the situation. This choice, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, profoundly impacts the party's fate.

Baldur's Gate 3 Orpheus Decision

Updated February 29, 2024: Before confronting this choice, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, requiring thorough exploration of Baldur's Gate's upper and lower districts. This decision carries significant weight; companions might sacrifice themselves. High skill checks (30+) may be needed to influence companion choices.

Spoiler Warning: The following discusses the game's ending.

To Free Orpheus or Not?

This decision hinges on player preferences. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers).

After the Netherbrain battle (which the Emperor teleports the party to the Astral Prism for), the choice is presented: liberate Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.

Siding with the Emperor: This results in Orpheus's demise as the Emperor absorbs his knowledge. Lae'zel and Karlach may disapprove, impacting their personal quests. While this aids in defeating the Netherbrain, it might displease players attached to these characters.

Freeing Orpheus: Freeing Orpheus aligns the Emperor with the Netherbrain. The risk of party members becoming Mind Flayers remains. However, Orpheus joins the fight against the Netherbrain, and will even sacrifice himself to prevent others from becoming Mind Flayers if asked.

In short, choose the Emperor to avoid becoming a Mind Flayer; choose Orpheus if you're willing to risk it. The Emperor's choice might alienate Lae'zel and send Karlach back to Avernus.

Moral Considerations:

The "good" choice depends on individual morality. It boils down to loyalty. Orpheus is the rightful Githyanki ruler, opposing Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him, while others may find Voss and Lae'zel's demands excessive. The Gith prioritize themselves, even if their actions impact the wider world.

The Emperor, generally benevolent, aims to defeat the Netherbrain and assist the party. He accepts that sacrifices are necessary. Following his plan might lead to Mind Flayer transformation, but it's a morally upright path. BG3's multiple endings allow for outcomes beneficial to all involved, depending on player choices.
