Nintendo has rolled out another system update for the Switch just days before the highly anticipated launch of the Switch 2. According to the concise patch notes, Version 20.1.0 of the Nintendo Switch System Update primarily focuses on enhancing general system stability, a common improvement across many firmware updates.

One of the more noticeable changes is the visual revamp applied to the parental control settings. Additionally, users will notice a shift in the audio experience when launching Nintendo Switch Online from the Home Menu. The new sound, as described by some, carries a slightly more vibrant tone, possibly hinting at what Switch 2 owners can expect upon using the same service on their new device. X / Twitter user @Nexusvoyager demonstrated this change in a recent post showcasing the pre-and-post-update audio difference.

In further detail, @Nexusvoyager pointed out that the update introduces new navigation sounds and modifies the user interface of the NSO app, aligning it closer to the experience expected on the Switch 2. This update seems to harmonize the entire Nintendo Switch Online app on the original Switch with the upcoming version intended for the Switch 2.

High-profile Switch observer @OatmealDome noted additional tweaks, such as renaming the "Basic White" and "Basic Black" themes to "Basic Light" and "Basic Dark," respectively. The update also introduces support for the Basic Dark theme within the NSO app.

It’s important to note that if you plan to perform a system transfer from a Nintendo Switch to a Nintendo Switch 2 via local communication, both devices must be running the latest firmware version to ensure compatibility.

These updates arrive just ahead of the Switch 2 launch on June 5, which is rapidly approaching. Despite Nintendo's efforts to keep the new console under wraps, overnight reports surfaced of an early Switch 2 unit being obtained, though it remains unusable without a day-one patch and faced immediate copyright strikes.

So far, early experiences with the Switch 2 include playing Mario Kart World, while additional details continue to emerge, such as free performance upgrades for existing Switch games, variable refresh rate support, and new features for GameChat, which requires phone number verification. Pre-orders for the Switch 2 were snapped up quickly last month, but Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser assures that sufficient stock will be available to meet demand throughout the holiday season.
