Nintendo Switch 2 Leak Hints at Huge Storage Improvement
Leaked GameStop SKUs Hint at Nintendo Switch 2's microSD Express Support
Recent leaks suggest the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 will boast significant storage improvements, potentially supporting microSD Express cards. This revelation comes from several GameStop stock keeping units (SKUs) seemingly related to unannounced Switch 2 accessories. These SKUs, initially posted by Reddit user Opposite-Chemistry96, list "Switch 2 Exp Micro SD Card" options in 256GB and 512GB capacities, strongly indicating microSD Express compatibility.
This represents a major upgrade from the current Switch's UHS-I microSD card support. The difference in speed is dramatic: UHS-I cards typically reach around 95 MB/s, while microSD Express cards can achieve speeds near 985 MB/s – a more than 900% increase. This enhanced speed is due to microSD Express cards utilizing the NVMe protocol, the same technology found in high-performance SSDs.
Capacity also sees a massive leap. UHS-I cards max out at 2TB, whereas microSD Express cards can reach a staggering 128TB – a 6,300% increase. The leaked GameStop pricing suggests a 256GB card will retail for $49.99, and a 512GB card for $84.99.
Beyond the microSD cards, the leak also includes SKUs for a standard Switch 2 carrying case ($19.99) and two "deluxe" cases ($29.99). While these are likely third-party accessories, their appearance further strengthens the credibility of the microSD Express information.
Nintendo has previously stated it will unveil its next console before the end of its fiscal year (March 31, 2025). With the ongoing influx of leaks and rumors, including mass production reportedly beginning in late 2024, the official reveal is highly anticipated.
UHS-I vs. microSD Express:
Feature | UHS-I | microSD Express |
---|---|---|
Transfer Speed | ~95 MB/s | ~985 MB/s |
Maximum Capacity | 2TB | 128TB |
The potential for significantly faster transfer speeds and vastly increased storage capacity with microSD Express strongly suggests Nintendo is aiming for a substantial technological advancement with the Switch 2.
