Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Theory Is Looking Pretty Good Right About Now
After the exciting reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 this morning, the buzz around using Joy-Con controllers as a mouse has intensified. The reveal trailer showcased a compelling scene where a pair of detached Joy-Cons are placed onto a surface, attachment side down, connecting to flat-bottomed connectors. These connectors then smoothly glide across the surface, reminiscent of a mouse on a mouse pad. A closer look reveals what appears to be a slider pad on the bottom of one connector, adding weight to the theory that Joy-Cons could indeed function as a mouse.
Rumors have been swirling in the lead-up to the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, suggesting that a sensor inside the Joy-Cons, similar to those found in computer mice, might enable this functionality. However, Nintendo has yet to confirm these speculations or discuss their potential implications. Fans are abuzz with ideas about how this could enhance gameplay in titles like Civilization, which traditionally benefit from mouse and keyboard controls. Others speculate that Nintendo might leverage this feature in innovative ways with their first-party titles, true to their creative heritage.
While the potential for mouse support on the Switch 2 remains uncertain (as does the purpose of the mysterious new Joy-Con button), we do have some solid information about the console. Officially named the Nintendo Switch 2, it's slated for a 2025 release. A new Mario Kart game is in development for the system, and it will be backward compatible with the original Switch. More details on upcoming software will be shared during a Direct in April. You can stay updated with all our Nintendo Switch 2 coverage right here.
