Naughty Dog President: No 'The Last of Us Part 3' in Development
The Last of Us developers might be done with the series, based on Naughty Dog’s comments regarding its future. Dive into this article to learn more about The Last of Us’ future and the current projects from Naughty Dog.
The Last Of Us Might Not Get Another Sequel
This Could Be It According To Naughty Dog
The Last Of Us (TLOU) might not see another sequel, potentially marking The Last of Us 2 as the final chapter in the acclaimed zombie post-apocalypse series. In an interview with Variety on March 5, 2025, Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann addressed the possibility of a third installment.
Druckmann stated, "I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it." This statement casts a shadow over the future of TLOU in gaming, as Naughty Dog shifts its focus towards elevating the TV series.
In a previous conversation with IGN at the DICE Summit 2025, Druckmann shared his perspective on creating sequels. He mentioned, "I think you're jinxing yourself if you're starting to think about the sequel when you're working on the first game. So when I was making The Last of Us 2, yeah, sure. Every once in a while an idea pops in your head of where it might go if we get the chance to do another one. But I just approach it as, ‘what if I never get to do another one?’...I'm not saving some idea for the future. If there's a cool idea, I'm doing my best to get it into here."
This approach suggests that TLOU might not see any further video game sequels, especially considering the conclusive nature of The Last of Us 2's ending. However, fans can still look forward to immersing themselves in the upcoming season 2 of The Last of Us TV series, set to premiere on April 13, 2025.
Working On A New IP
While the future of TLOU in gaming remains uncertain, Naughty Dog is already hard at work on a new intellectual property. During The Game Awards 2024, the studio announced their latest project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, slated for the PlayStation 5.
A short teaser trailer unveiled at the event highlighted the game's sci-fi theme. According to its official website, Naughty Dog began developing this title in 2020, promising what could be their most ambitious and creative story to date. Since the announcement, further details on Intergalactic have been sparse.
The Last of Us Online Cancelled To Give Way To Intergalactic
It was previously reported that The Last of Us Online was cancelled, as Naughty Dog chose to concentrate on single-player experiences. The decision hinted at the studio working on a new project, which has now been revealed as Intergalactic.
In a February 19, 2025, interview on the Sacred Symbols+ podcast, former Sony Interactive Entertainment President Shuhei Yoshida explained that TLOU Online had to be discontinued to prioritize Intergalactic. Yoshida noted that advice from Destiny creator Bungie about the demands of live-service games played a role in this decision. He stated, "The idea for The Last of Us Online came from Naughty Dog and they really wanted to make it." He continued, "But Bungie explained what it takes to make live-service games, and Naughty Dog realized, 'Oops, we can't do that! If we do it, we can't make Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.' So that was a lack of foresight."
With Druckmann’s comments and the cancellation of TLOU Online, it appears Naughty Dog might be stepping away from the franchise for now. Nonetheless, fans can still anticipate the release of The Last of Us 2 Remastered on PC on April 3, 2025.
