Mortal Kombat 1 DLC Ends, Next Project Begins

Author : Stella Update : Oct 12,2025

Warner Bros. has confirmed Mortal Kombat 1 players' worst fears following the Definitive Edition launch: no additional DLC characters or story expansions will be developed for the fighting game.

Despite selling 5 million copies and contributing to the franchise's landmark 100 million total sales, Mortal Kombat 1 hasn't matched the commercial success of its predecessors. For comparison, Mortal Kombat 11 became the series' best-selling title shortly after launch, surpassing Mortal Kombat X's 11 million units and eventually reaching over 15 million sales by 2022.

The official Mortal Kombat account addressed fan disappointment in a statement: "While we'll continue supporting MK1 with balance updates, our team must now dedicate resources to ensure our next project meets expectations."

Warner Bros. hasn't revealed specifics about NetherRealm Studios' next title, but industry speculation strongly suggests Injustice 3 as the likely successor to their DC fighter series.

The full developer statement reads:

"We recognize player demand for ongoing MK1 content support. While we'll maintain gameplay balancing and technical fixes, no further DLC characters or story content will be produced.
We appreciate this announcement may disappoint fans, but redirecting our development focus ensures we can deliver excellence in our upcoming project."

The March 2025 T-1000 character release – arriving eighteen months post-launch – now stands as MK1's final major content update. This contrasts with Mortal Kombat 11's support, which continued for over two years before NetherRealm shifted to MK1 development.

Players are revisiting earlier assurances from creative director Ed Boon, particularly his September 2024 statement confirming "NetherRealm's long-term commitment to Mortal Kombat 1," fueling current frustration within the community.

The January 2025 "Floyd" secret battle – referencing Boon's years-long tease of a pink ninja character – briefly revitalized community engagement. However, this highlight couldn't offset overall fan disappointment regarding MK1's content lifecycle.

Warner Bros. Discovery executives have reiterated their commitment to the franchise, naming Mortal Kombat among four core gaming IPs moving forward. The upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 film adaptation arrives later this year.
