In the diverse arsenal of *Monster Hunter Now*, the Great Sword stands out as a devastating weapon capable of inflicting massive damage with each swing. However, its size presents a challenge. To maximize its potential, a well-crafted build is essential, focusing on controlling the monster's movements.

Recent updates have introduced sleep-inducing weapons crafted from specific monster materials. This build leverages those materials, combined with crucial skills, to consistently put monsters to sleep, setting up those massive, high-damage attacks.

Weapon: Frilled Blade

The Frilled Blade is the optimal sleep-based Great Sword. Its Evade Extender skill provides crucial distance after dodging, significantly improving survivability with the Great Sword's slower attacks. This weapon requires Somnacanth materials.

Frilled Blade

Helmet & Greaves: Nightshade Paolumu

The core of this build utilizes Nightmare Paolumu materials, introduced in an early event. These provide the essential Rude Awakener skill (all three levels), which boosts damage by 100% on the first attack against a sleeping monster. While less frequent now, Nightmare Paolumu still appear in events and as rare spawns.

Mail, Vambraces, & Coil: Tzitzi-Ya-Ku

Completing the build, Tzitzi-Ya-Ku parts maximize Status Sneak Attack, guaranteeing sleep buildup with rear attacks. This also adds points to Evade Extender and includes Artful Dodger for enhanced evasion. Fortunately, Tzitzi-Ya-Ku is a much more common target.

Optimizing Driftstone Slots

Driftstone Slots

This build benefits from a relatively low Driftstone slot requirement. Five slots are ideal for maximizing Sleep Attack. Alternatively, prioritize Artful Dodger and Evade Extender for improved defense, or Sneak Attack for increased damage on rear attacks.

  • Sleep Attack (Azure): Increases sleep buildup (50 at Rank 1, 150 at Rank 5).
  • Sneak Attack (Pale): Increases damage from rear attacks (10% at Rank 1, 30% at Rank 5).
  • Artful Dodger (Azure): Improves evasion ease.
  • Evade Extender (Pale): Extends evasion distance.
