Microsoft Releases and Retracts Xbox UI Mockup with Steam Games Tab
Microsoft has inadvertently revealed a potential new feature in an upcoming Xbox UI update, as mentioned in a now-edited blog post titled "Opening a Billion Doors with Xbox." The post, as reported by The Verge, included an image showcasing Xbox Series X | S consoles alongside various devices. A keen eye would notice a "Steam" tab on some of the screens, suggesting a possible integration with Valve's digital PC storefront. This image was subsequently removed from the blog post, indicating that the feature was not meant to be public yet.

The inclusion of Steam in the Xbox UI is intriguing, especially since Valve's platform typically doesn't intersect with Microsoft's gaming hardware in this manner. Sources from The Verge have confirmed that Microsoft is indeed working on an update that would allow users to view their PC game libraries from Steam, the Epic Games Store, and other PC storefronts directly on their Xbox. This would enable players to see all their installed games and the respective platforms they were purchased from. However, the project is still in its early stages, and no immediate rollout is expected.

The mention of Steam in an official Xbox UI mockup, even if unintentional, is noteworthy. Microsoft has been actively expanding its gaming ecosystem beyond Xbox consoles over the past decade. Notable efforts include releasing games like Pentiment and Grounded on PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch, with rumors suggesting that the Master Chief Collection might also make its way to PlayStation.
Microsoft's strategy has been to increasingly merge the Xbox and PC gaming experiences. This was highlighted in the recent "This is an Xbox" campaign, which emphasizes the versatility of devices on which Xbox games can be played. In an interview with Polygon, Xbox head Phil Spencer hinted at a future where PC stores like Itch.io and the Epic Games Store could be integrated into Xbox hardware.
Looking ahead, Microsoft's next-generation Xbox, expected in 2027, is rumored to be more akin to a PC than any previous Xbox model, further blurring the lines between the two platforms.
