Over the weekend, fans of Hideo Kojima were treated to a new trailer for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, which also revealed a release date, collector's edition, box art, and more. As enthusiasts delved into the details, a keen observer on Reddit, user ReverseTheFlash, pointed out a fun nod to Kojima's earlier work, Metal Gear Solid 2.

The box art for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach features Sam "Porter" Bridges, portrayed by Norman Reedus, cradling the child "Lou," a familiar figure from the first game. ReverseTheFlash shared this image alongside a Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty slipcase, noting a striking similarity in composition. The MGS2 promo shows Japanese singer Gackt holding a child in a similar pose. While not an exact replica, the parallels are intriguing and serve as a reminder of the unique promotional strategies employed for Metal Gear Solid 2.

During the marketing campaign for Metal Gear Solid 2, Gackt was prominently featured in various promotions, including special slip-covers distributed in some regions. These items have since become curious artifacts that both intrigue and puzzle fans.

Kojima himself explained the reason behind Gackt's involvement in a 2013 statement. He noted that while Metal Gear Solid 1 was themed around DNA, Metal Gear Solid 2 focused on memes. Kojima cleverly linked this to Gackt by pointing out that DNA's components "AGTC," when combined with the "K" from his surname, spell out "GACKT."

Given the new trailer for Death Stranding 2 has a strong Metal Gear vibe, it's no wonder fans are spotting these connections. While the similarities might simply reflect recurring themes in Kojima's work, it's always enjoyable to speculate and reminisce, especially about promotional materials featuring Gackt.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is set to launch on June 26, 2025, exclusively on PlayStation 5.
