The developers at Warhorse Studios are expressing frustration over the backlash surrounding Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (KCD2), emphasizing their desire to create an engaging video game. In a recent interview with PC Gamer on February 3, 2025, Tobias Stolz-Zwilling, the PR Manager for KCD2, addressed the criticism the game has received due to its increased diversity.

Stolz-Zwilling remarked, "Several years ago, we were branded differently. Now we are branded that way. It seems like someone is always trying to brand us somehow, and we are just trying to make a cool videogame." This statement comes in response to the game's inclusion of LGBTQ+ content and other elements that have been labeled as "woke" by some fans and critics.

Senior Game Designer Ondřej Bittner echoed these sentiments, stating, "We think the extreme voices are just never happy." He highlighted that the team's focus is on creating a game, not on fueling controversy.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s Diversity

Set in the historical city of Kuttenberg, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 introduces a more diverse setting than its predecessor. Bittner explained, "There's more ethnicities in Kuttenberg because Kuttenberg is the royal mint." As the second most important city in Bohemia and the country’s financial hub, Kuttenberg naturally attracts a diverse population from various parts of the world.

Bittner further elaborated on the game's inclusion of different cultures and ethnicities, such as Italians, Germans who speak German, and a Jewish quarter. He emphasized the importance of not only including these diverse groups but also reflecting their unique worldviews, which he believes is often overlooked in media claiming to be diverse.

Stolz-Zwilling clarified that the game's direction was not influenced by their publisher Plaion or Embracer, but rather by community feedback. He stated, "Everything makes sense. Everything we put there was double and triple checked," ensuring historical accuracy and relevance.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Pre-Orders Unaffected By Recent Backlash

Warhorse Studios has addressed recent rumors about players seeking refunds for pre-ordering the game amidst the controversy. KCD2 Writer Daniel Vávra took to Twitter (X) to clarify that the game's sales-return ratio remains unchanged despite the backlash. He noted that KCD2's position on Steam charts was affected by discounts on nine other popular games, which also impacted Monster Hunter: Wilds pre-order sales.

In January 2025, Vávra faced attacks over KCD2's inclusion of queer representation, which led to rumors of the game being banned in Saudi Arabia due to unskippable LGBT+ scenes. Vávra debunked these rumors, emphasizing that Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is a role-playing game where player choices lead to consequences reflective of the historical period's morals and social norms.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is now available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. For more details about the game, visit our Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 page.
