HBO is reportedly in final negotiations with John Lithgow, the acclaimed actor known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, in its upcoming Harry Potter reboot. Variety reports that a deal is imminent, though HBO has declined to confirm the casting. This follows earlier speculation in November that Mark Rylance was a frontrunner for the role.

"We appreciate that such a high-profile series will generate considerable speculation," an HBO spokesperson stated. "As we progress through pre-production, we will only confirm casting details once agreements are finalized."

Lithgow's extensive and celebrated career includes roles in films such as The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, and Footloose, as well as television appearances in Dexter and The Crown.

While casting remains largely confidential, reports suggest HBO is making significant progress. The search continues for actors to fill the roles of Harry, Hermione, and Ron, but Paapa Essiedu has reportedly been cast as Severus Snape.

The series will reportedly prioritize British talent, a decision perhaps influenced by J.K. Rowling's involvement in the casting process.

Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter series aims to be a faithful adaptation of the books, promising a richer, more in-depth narrative than the film adaptations allowed. The series will be helmed by Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, producers of Succession, with Mylod also contributing writing experience from Game of Thrones.
