Fortnite Makes Another Big Change to Master Chief Skin
Following community outcry, Fortnite reverses its decision to remove the unlockable Matte Black style for the Master Chief skin.
Epic Games initially announced the Matte Black style would be unavailable, sparking significant backlash. This reversal comes during Fortnite's busy December, a month filled with Winterfest events and new content. While the Winterfest has been generally well-received, the Master Chief skin's altered availability caused controversy.
A recent tweet confirmed the good news: the Matte Black style is once again unlockable. The Master Chief skin, a popular addition to Fortnite in 2020, returned to the Item Shop in 2024. However, the December 23rd announcement removing the Matte Black style—previously advertised as always unlockable for Xbox Series X/S players—drew considerable ire. Epic Games has now reinstated the original unlock conditions.
The Master Chief Skin's Controversial Return
The initial decision angered many players, some even suggesting potential FTC involvement. This follows the FTC's recent $72 million refund to Fortnite players due to "dark patterns" used by Epic Games. The frustration stemmed from the change impacting both new and existing Master Chief skin owners. Even those who purchased the skin in 2020 were initially prevented from unlocking the Matte Black style.
This isn't the only recent skin controversy. The return of the Renegade Raider skin also caused a stir, with veteran players threatening to leave the game. Currently, some players are requesting an "OG" style for original Master Chief skin purchasers, though Epic Games seems unlikely to fulfill this request. While the Matte Black issue is resolved, the debate surrounding skin exclusivity continues.
