Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary Site Hints at Switch 2 Remake Reveal

The buzz around a potential Final Fantasy 9 remake has intensified following Square Enix's launch of an official 25th Anniversary website for the game. This Japanese-language site commemorates the game's release on July 7, 2000, and hints at various celebratory projects, including merchandise and collaborations. The mention of "various projects" has sparked speculation among fans that a long-awaited remake could be on the horizon.

The timing of the website's debut has not gone unnoticed, especially with Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2-focused Direct scheduled for April 2. Fans are hopeful that Square Enix might seize this opportunity to announce the Final Fantasy 9 remake for the Switch 2. However, the website's focus on merchandise and collaborations leaves room for doubt, and the phrase "various projects" remains tantalizingly vague.

Last year, Final Fantasy 14 producer Naoki 'Yoshi-P' Yoshida shed some light on what a Final Fantasy 9 remake might entail, suggesting that its vast scope could necessitate a multi-part release similar to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which is currently in the midst of a planned trilogy. Yoshi-P acknowledged the game's large volume and expressed uncertainty about fitting it into a single title.

Adding fuel to the speculation, earlier in 2024, Yoshi-P revealed Final Fantasy 9-themed bonuses for the Collector's Edition and Digital Collector's Edition of the Final Fantasy 14 expansion, Dawntrail. These include the iconic Ark summon as a mount and a wind-up Princess Garnet minion. Pre-orders of Dawntrail also come with a wind-up Zidane minion. During PAX East, Yoshi-P playfully hinted at the significance of these Final Fantasy 9 references but kept the details under wraps.

Rumors of a Final Fantasy 9 remake have been circulating since a 2021 Nvidia leak listed it among upcoming titles, alongside other Square Enix projects like the Chrono Cross remaster, Kingdom Hearts 4, and the Final Fantasy 7 remake for PC. While some of these titles have since been released or announced, Final Fantasy 9 and Final Fantasy Tactics remain unconfirmed. Additionally, reports of a Final Fantasy 9 animated series surfaced in June 2021, though no further developments have been shared since.
