Favreau's Oswald Rabbit Series Coming to Disney+
Disney animation veteran Jon Favreau is teaming up with Disney+ to create a new series featuring the classic animated icon, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. According to a Deadline report, Favreau will leverage his expertise in both live-action and animation to bring Oswald to the small screen. He's slated to serve as both writer and producer for this exciting new project. While plot details and casting information remain under wraps, the announcement promises a fresh take on this beloved character.
Oswald, a significant figure in Disney's history, had a surprisingly brief stint with the company. Created by Walt Disney himself, Oswald starred in 26 silent cartoons between 1927 and 1928 before a rights dispute led to his departure and the rise of Mickey Mouse, as detailed in our comprehensive look at Disney's 100-year history. Disney reacquired the rights to Oswald in 2006, and in 2022, released a new short film featuring the character after a 95-year hiatus. This new series signals Disney's commitment to Oswald's continued presence beyond a simple nostalgic nod to its past. While a release date is yet to be announced, the project is expected to debut sometime in the future.
This project marks a return to Disney's roots for Favreau, who's recently been immersed in some of its newest franchises. His contributions to the *Star Wars* universe ( *The Mandalorian*, *Skeleton Crew*, *Ahsoka*) are well-known, as is his long-standing involvement with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, both in front of and behind the camera. He also directed the 2019 *Lion King* remake and is set to direct again for *The Mandalorian* and Grogu's theatrical release in 2026.Interestingly, Oswald's recent cinematic appearance predates this announcement by less than a year. In 2023, Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole, a horror film starring Ernie Hudson, was released, capitalizing on Oswald’s recent entrance into the public domain.
