"Evil Dead: Game Removed from Stores 3 Years Post-Launch, Servers Stay Online"
Evil Dead: The Game, the beloved asymmetric multiplayer title inspired by the iconic action horror franchise, is no longer available for purchase. The game, which launched in 2022 across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms, received an impressive 8/10 from IGN. Our review praised it as, “Evil Dead: The Game is an asymmetric multiplayer game of cat and mouse that’s compelling and exhilarating, despite being rough around the edges - much like the horror/comedies that inspired it.”
Despite the launch of a Game of the Year Edition a year later, the game struggled to maintain player engagement. The planned Nintendo Switch version was canceled in September 2023, and further content development was halted. Now, three years after its initial release, Evil Dead: The Game has been removed from digital storefronts by its publisher, Saber Interactive. However, existing owners can continue to enjoy the game as its servers will remain online.
Saber Interactive released a statement on the game’s Steam page, confirming the decision:
We can confirm we've begun the process of removing the game from digital storefronts. Anyone who has purchased the game will still be able to play it as we plan to keep our servers online for everyone.
We want to extend a sincere thank you to our community, to those who have been part of the game from the very beginning, and those who have recently joined us. We appreciate all of your support.
The decision has been met with disappointment, as evidenced by numerous negative reviews on the game's Steam page. Many players feel that the game is now effectively "dead." Despite this, the game maintains a 'mixed' user review rating on Steam. One positive review from a dedicated player with over 380 hours in-game reflects a bittersweet sentiment: “The end is nigh. It was fun while it lasted, lads. I mean that.”
Saber Interactive, known for last year’s successful Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, continues to work on several exciting licensed movie games. Upcoming projects include John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, Jurassic Park Survival, an untitled Avatar: The Last Airbender game, Turok: Origins, and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3.
