Ecco the Dolphin Reboot, Including an All-New Original Game, in the Works

The creator of Ecco the Dolphin, Ed Annunziata, has announced exciting developments for fans of the iconic series. In a recent interview on Xbox Wire, Annunziata shared that not only are remakes of the original games in the works, but a brand new "third" installment is also being developed. Annunziata and the original team are set to remaster Ecco the Dolphin and Ecco: The Tides of Time, followed by a new game that promises contemporary gameplay and graphics.

While there has already been a "third" game in the series, Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future, released on Dreamcast in 2000, Annunziata was not involved in its creation. A planned sequel, Ecco 2: Sentinels of the Universe, was unfortunately cancelled. Fans have expressed their excitement and nostalgia, with one mentioning their desire to use the secret password from Ecco: The Tides of Time, and another highlighting the game's unique and bizarre plot.

Although specific details on the release dates for these projects remain under wraps, a countdown on the official Ecco the Dolphin website suggests that fans might see the remakes and new game in about a year, as it is set to expire in 8,508 hours.

Originally launched in 1992 on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, Ecco the Dolphin was followed by its sequel, Ecco: The Tides of Time, in 1994. The series also saw the release of "edutainment" titles, Ecco Jr. and Ecco Jr. and the Great Ocean Treasure Hunt in 1995. In Ecco the Dolphin, players guide the titular dolphin through dangerous environments to reunite with his pod after a devastating natural event.

Previous remakes of the series have received mixed reviews. The 2000 remake was described as a classic that perhaps should remain in the past, while the 2007 version received criticism for lacking additional content and meaningful achievements, according to IGN's Ecco the Dolphin review. However, Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future was more positively received, earning a 7.6 score from IGN's Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future review, praised for its visuals, story, and the engaging personality of Ecco.
