Disney's Snow White Remake Struggles to Break Even After Slow Box Office Start
Snow White, directed by Marc Webb of The Amazing Spider-Man fame, had a challenging debut at the box office, securing one of the lowest domestic totals for a Disney remake to date. According to Comscore, the film opened with $43 million domestically, making it the second highest-grossing film of 2025 so far, trailing only behind Captain America: Brave New World. Despite topping this week's chart, its earnings fell short of Dumbo's 2019 domestic opening of $45 million and were below initial projections.
To put things into perspective, other Disney remakes have seen much stronger opening weekends: The Lion King (2019) with over $175 million, Beauty and the Beast (2017) with $174 million, The Jungle Book (2016) with $103 million, and The Little Mermaid (2023) with $118 million.
Internationally, Snow White had a similarly modest start, earning $44.3 million, bringing its global total to $87.3 million as per Comscore estimates.
*Snow White* is a live-action adaptation of Disney’s beloved 1937 animated classic, featuring Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. With a hefty production budget reported to be over $250 million, the film faces a steep challenge to turn a profit, especially when marketing expenses are factored in.However, there's a glimmer of hope for Snow White. Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King, which opened to a disappointing $35.4 million domestically, ultimately grossed over $717 million worldwide. Disney is likely banking on a similar 'sleeper hit' success for Snow White, especially as questions persist regarding the performance of Captain America: Brave New World, which has now reached $400.8 million globally after six weekends.
IGN's review of Snow White scored it a 7/10, noting: “Snow White is a live-action Disney remake that meaningfully adapts its original, rather than creating a lesser mimicry.”
