Destiny 2's Year of Prophecy: Key Details for Guardians
Get ready, Guardians! Bungie has just unveiled an exciting lineup for Destiny 2, marking the "Year of Prophecy" with a series of expansions and updates that promise to enhance the experience for both paying and free players. This year is set to be packed with four major content releases, including two paid expansions and two significant updates accessible to all players.
Kicking off the year is "Rite of the Nine," a free update that offers a fresh take on dungeon diving. Available now, it invites both seasoned and new players to explore familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep with unique twists. Expect to reconnect with Orin and discover refreshed dungeon weapons that will keep even the most experienced Guardians on their toes.
On July 15, the first paid expansion, "Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate," will launch, marking the beginning of a multiyear saga involving the mysterious Nine. This expansion introduces new characters, Lodi and Ikora, and takes players to the new destination, Kepler. Inspired by Destiny 2's dungeons, Kepler promises puzzle-solving, pathfinding challenges, and deep exploration. Players can look forward to new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.
Simultaneously, on July 15, Bungie will roll out major core game innovations. These include revised armor and gear systems to enhance buildcrafting opportunities and a new activity selection screen called the Portal. This screen will allow players to choose between Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the newly introduced Solo Ops, catering to different play styles and preferences. With 50 new modifiers, players can customize their gameplay and chase specific rewards through curated activity rotations.
As with any new expansion, pre-order bonuses are available. Here's what you can get:

The year will conclude with the "Shadow & Order" update on March 3. "Renegades" draws inspiration from the legendary Star Wars universe, blending Destiny's unique storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi elements.
These announcements come as welcome news to the Destiny 2 community, especially after Bungie's layoffs of 220 staff members in July 2024, following another 100 layoffs less than a year prior.
While Destiny 2 continues to evolve, Bungie is also working on the reboot of their classic franchise, Marathon. Revealed in May 2023, the first hands-on preview of Marathon was shared recently, with IGN reporting a promising alpha state that could satisfy the long-standing demand for a new Bungie PvP experience. Marathon is set to launch on PC and consoles in September.
