Chris Evans Says He Isn't Returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Another Avengers
Chris Evans has definitively stated that he will not be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in Avengers: Doomsday or any other future films, despite recent reports suggesting otherwise. Evans directly refuted a Deadline article claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling the report "not true." This contradicts a statement made by Anthony Mackie, who plays the new Captain America, who had previously indicated that Evans would be returning based on information from his manager. However, Mackie subsequently spoke to Evans, who confirmed his retirement from the MCU. Evans reiterated his retirement to Esquire, stating that such rumors resurface periodically since Avengers: Endgame, and he has ceased responding to them.
While Evans has briefly returned to the Marvel universe in a comedic role as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, his statement makes it clear he is not reprising his iconic Captain America role.
The MCU's future remains somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors, who played Kang the Conqueror, due to assault and harassment charges. Majors's departure has seemingly disrupted Marvel's plans, leading to Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., being established as the new primary antagonist. This announcement fueled speculation about other original Avengers returning, although nothing beyond Downey Jr.'s casting has been officially confirmed.
Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange, confirmed his absence from Avengers: Doomsday, but will have a "central role" in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to continue the multiverse storyline, potentially including Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter.
