Captain America: Brave New World Nears $300 Million Global Box Office After 68% Domestic Drop Second Weekend
Captain America: Brave New World's box office performance is proving challenging. While the film has grossed nearly $300 million globally, a steep 68% drop in domestic revenue during its second weekend raises concerns about its profitability.
According to Deadline, the film's $180 million production budget necessitates a global box office gross of approximately $425 million to break even. The initial $100 million domestic opening, exceeding expectations, was followed by a significantly weaker second weekend gross of $28.2 million. This substantial drop mirrors the performance of 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which ultimately failed to recoup its production costs.
After two weekends, Comscore reports global earnings of approximately $289.4 million ($141.2 million domestically and $148.2 million internationally), with an additional $63.5 million earned worldwide during its second weekend. Despite being the biggest theatrical release of 2025 to date, the considerable second-weekend decline is a cause for concern. Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian notes to Variety that this significant drop reflects less audience enthusiasm than typically expected from Marvel films, suggesting a "new normal" for the franchise.
Deadline projects a final global box office gross of around $450 million for Captain America: Brave New World. This projection, coupled with generally poor critical reception (IGN awarded a 5/10), puts pressure on Marvel Studios and Disney. The studios are hoping for a strong rebound to counteract the recent underperformance of MCU films (excluding the successful Deadpool & Wolverine), building momentum for upcoming releases like Thunderbolts in May and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.
