Beloved Nintendo 64 Gem Headed to Modern Platforms
Doom 64's Potential Next-Gen Debut: PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Versions on the Horizon?
Recent updates to ESRB ratings hint at a possible upcoming release of Doom 64 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. While neither Bethesda nor id Software have made official announcements, the updated ESRB listing strongly suggests a new port is imminent.
The original Doom 64, a Nintendo 64 exclusive from 1997, received a 2020 remaster for PS4 and Xbox One, featuring graphical enhancements and an additional chapter. This new ESRB rating indicates a potential expansion to current-generation consoles.
ESRB ratings typically precede a game's release by a few months, suggesting a relatively short wait for players eager to experience this classic shooter on enhanced hardware. While the updated rating omits mention of a PC release, the 2020 version included a Steam release, and PC players can already enjoy a Doom 64 experience through existing mods. Given Bethesda's history of surprise releases for older Doom titles, a similar unannounced launch for Doom 64 remains a distinct possibility.
The ESRB's track record further strengthens this speculation. Previous instances, such as the 2023 leak of Felix the Cat's re-release, demonstrate the board's tendency to reveal game releases ahead of official announcements.
Beyond Doom 64, the Doom franchise's future looks bright. Doom: The Dark Ages is anticipated for a 2025 release, with a potential official announcement date in January. Releasing updated versions of classic titles like Doom 64 serves as an excellent way to build excitement for the next major installment in the franchise.
