In *Assassin’s Creed Shadows*, you can unlock various animals by interacting with them for the first time. When Naoe or Yasuke pet a new breed of cat or dog, that specific animal becomes available for your Hideout. You can encounter and unlock multiple dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens, including the stray from the pre-order DLC quest “Thrown to the Dogs.”

Yasuke can also unlock smaller animals by painting them. This includes rabbits, fox kits, tanukis, and monkeys, which you might come across and document in the wild. These critters can then be added to your Hideout for a touch of nature.

To add animals to your Hideout, enter the Hiroma and approach the bench to access the customization menu. Switch to build mode and navigate to the wolf icon on the far right. This section will display all the animal types you’ve unlocked, categorized into dogs, cats, and “other.”

Choose the animal you wish to add. You'll be taken to an overhead view of the Hideout where you can select an open grid to place your new companion. Remember, animals will roam freely once you exit build mode, so they might not always be in the same spot when you return.

You can add multiple instances of the same animal to the Hideout, except for the “Thrown to the Dogs” pup. Keep in mind the game’s limit on the total number of animals you can have. You’re free to remove or replace critters at any time using build mode.
