Ōkami 2: Direct Sequel Emerges in Development

Author : Aaron Update : Feb 20,2025

The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, announced at last year's Game Awards, has finally received some clarification. While details remain scarce, a recent IGN interview with the project leads revealed key information.

Confirmed: The sequel is a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's storyline. Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi explicitly stated it's a "continuation of the story that we saw in the original game," confirming Amaterasu's return (despite director Hideki Kamiya's playful ambiguity).

PlayWhile the return of Amaterasu is unsurprising, the team addressed the previous Ōkami sequel, Ōkamiden. This Nintendo DS title, starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu, received mixed reviews due to its platform and the absence of key original team members. Hirabayashi acknowledged the existing fanbase and the varied feedback regarding Ōkamiden's storyline, emphasizing that the new sequel directly follows the original Ōkami's narrative.

The original Ōkami's ending, without revealing spoilers, leaves a clear path for a sequel. Amaterasu and another character embark on an unexplored journey, promising new challenges and adventures.

However, fans will have to exercise patience. The sequel is in its very early stages of development, with the early announcement driven by the team's excitement. According to Hirabayashi, further updates are some time away.
