Stay Informed with Real-Time Alerts

AuroraWatch UK sends you alerts when there's an increase in geomagnetic activity, indicating a change in the AuroraWatch status level. This change reflects the potential for viewing the aurora from the UK. You can also check the current alert status and review the activity history from the last 24 hours. Additionally, the app provides a 30-minute forecast model from the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC).

Important Notes on AuroraWatch UK

• Not a Forecasting App: AuroraWatch UK is designed to monitor and alert you based on current geomagnetic activity, not to forecast future events.
• Phone Settings: Ensure your phone's settings, such as Battery Saver, do not restrict push notifications, as this could limit or prevent aurora alerts from reaching you.
• Alert Reception: Check your phone's Settings/Notifications/App settings to confirm that Aurora Watch UK notifications are enabled. Note that the app does not send alerts retroactively; if your phone is off or disconnected when an alert is triggered and the status changes before the next data update, you will not receive an alert.
• Data Delay: There is a necessary delay in sending alerts to allow the data to stabilize, as recommended by Lancaster University.
• Magnetometer Data: Alerts are primarily based on data from Lancaster University's magnetometer, though they also have a magnetometer in Shetland. Alerts may be more conservative, especially for those in England, as they do not typically use the Shetland data.
