Typically enjoyed by four players in fixed partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other, 29 is played using 32 cards from a standard 52-card deck. These cards are divided into the familiar "French" suits: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. Each suit ranks from high to low as follows: J-9-A-10-K-Q-8-7. The goal is to capture tricks that contain high-value cards.

The scoring system is straightforward:

• Jacks: 3 points each
• Nines: 2 points each
• Aces: 1 point each
• Tens: 1 point each
• Other cards (K, Q, 8, 7): no points

This adds up to a total of 28 points from the cards. In some versions, the last trick scores an additional point, bringing the total to 29 points, which is where the game gets its name. Nowadays, many players opt not to count the point for the last trick, yet the game retains the name 29, even when played with only 28 points.

The discarded Twos, Threes, Fours, and Fives from the full 52-card deck serve as trump indicators, with each player holding a set of these cards, one from each suit. The Sixes are used for keeping score, with each partnership employing one red and one black Six for this purpose.
