Okami 2: Sequel Dreams Fulfilled After 18 Years
Hideki Kamiya, renowned game director behind classics like Okami, Devil May Cry, and Bayonetta, embarks on a new chapter. After a 20-year tenure at PlatinumGames, he's launched Clovers Inc., a new studio dedicated to fulfilling a long-held dream: an Okami sequel.
A Sequel 18 Years in the Making
Kamiya's passion for Okami is well-documented. He's publicly expressed his desire for a sequel, viewing the original's narrative as unfinished. His new venture with Capcom, as publisher, finally brings this vision to life. The project represents a personal fulfillment, a culmination of years of advocating for the game's continuation.
Clovers Inc.: A New Beginning
Clovers Inc., a joint venture with former PlatinumGames colleague Kento Koyama, is a nod to Clover Studio, the developer behind the original Okami. Kamiya, focusing on development, and Koyama, managing the business side, form a dynamic duo. The studio currently boasts 25 employees, with plans for gradual expansion. Kamiya emphasizes a shared creative vision over sheer size, prioritizing passionate individuals dedicated to crafting exceptional games. Many team members are former PlatinumGames employees who share this philosophy.
Departure from PlatinumGames
Kamiya's departure from PlatinumGames, a company he co-founded, surprised many. While he remains tight-lipped about specific reasons, he alludes to differing philosophies on game development as the catalyst for his move. The shared vision with Koyama at Clovers Inc. proved a compelling alternative. Despite the circumstances, Kamiya expresses immense enthusiasm for the Okami sequel, highlighting the excitement of building something new from the ground up.
A Softer Side?
Kamiya's online persona is known for its bluntness. Recently, however, he's shown a more empathetic side, publicly apologizing to a fan for past harsh interactions. This shift in demeanor seems to coincide with the positive reception to the Okami sequel announcement. While his signature wit remains, a newfound appreciation for fan engagement is evident.
